Two Cameras, One Point of View
Depending on the place and the feeling I’m after, I shoot with either my old Nikon D90 or a Panasonic Lumix compact camera. They create two quite different looks, but both have the slightly imperfect, atmospheric feel I’m drawn to.
The Soft & Cinematic.
My Nikon D90 has been around for a while, and the video has a look that comes with its age.
It’s soft, grainy and far from crystal-clear — and that’s exactly what I like about it. There’s something cinematic and almost timeless about the footage, like a memory rather than a recording.
I especially love capturing short clips with it — little moments and details that might not say much on their own, but come together to create a whole atmosphere. It’s a style that works particularly well for short-form and vertical content.
The Bigger Picture.
My Panasonic Lumix gives me a more detailed image, while still keeping the retro character I like.
I tend to reach for it when I want to capture more of the surroundings — especially for horizontal video, where there’s room for the setting, movement and small details to become part of the frame.
For longer shots or a little more detail, while still feeling natural and atmospheric, this is my go-to.
